22 Books That All Babies and Toddlers Need

One of the very first things you can do to help your baby from the moment you discover you’re pregnant is read to them. You can read to them in the womb, you can read to them the day they are born, and you can read to them every day after that. The words, the colors, the pictures, even just the simple touch of a book are all extremely important in the development of your child. As a teacher, I know first hand how many books are available out there. This list could have gone on forever because there are SO many amazing books. However, I decided to choose 22 of my favorite baby books out there. I hope you will be able to enjoy them as much as my family has!

1.) Where’s Spot Series

This series is so much fun. Laugh along with your little one as they go on adventures with our favorite dog, Spot!

2.) Press Here

Press Here is an interactive book for children of all ages. Parents will have fun too following along with the book and seeing their child’s reaction to each page.

3.) Peek-A-Boo Forest

Soft books are perfect for young babies, diaper bags, strollers, car seats, and so much more. This lift a flap book will be loved by every baby.

4.) Peek-a-Who?

My daughter absolutely loves this book. It is always one of the first ones she pulls off of the bookshelf. We love the interactive format and simplicity of the book. It is awesome for fostering early independence with reading.

5.) Quack! Quack!

Quack, Quack is such a fun touch and feel book. Not only does it teach about different animals and the sounds they make, but it also teaches about body parts as well as includes different types of tactile components that are perfect for early sensory development.

6.) Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site

If you have a child that loves, cars, tractors, construction equipment, or really anything with wheels, this is the book for them! They will learn about different sounds as well as rhyming throughout.

7.) Where Is Baby’s Belly Button?

Teaching your child about the different parts of their body is so fun with this book. My daughter loves the flaps to lift and always giggles on the belly button page.

8.) God Bless You and Good Night

This is such a sweet night time story. It has beautiful illustrations throughout and is a wonderful depiction of a child’s typical bedtime routine which will allow children to make personal connections to the story.

9.) Good Night, Little One

We LOVE this book in our house. We read it every night before bed. It teaches all the different parts of the body by saying goodnight to them. We kiss each part as we are saying goodnight to it, which my daughter loves.

10.) We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is another fun interactive book. Children can act out what they would do if they were on a bear hunt along with the book. The fun sounds and noises throughout can be made by the child to add in even more fun!

11.) Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

This classic book is loved by many. Teaching children about different animals, colors, and patterns it is sure to be a hit.

12.) My First Library Board Book Block 12-Book Set

These mini board books are the perfect size for little hands. Children can enjoy carrying them around, putting them in and out of baskets, flipping through the pages independently, and seeing the bright colors and Disney characters. What’s not to love?

13.) The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is another timeless book that any child will love. Not only will they enjoy reading it but they will learn a lot too! Counting, different foods, colors, and the life cycle of a butterfly. The board book is extra fun because there are holes in the fruit that kids love to put their finger in!

14.) Babies Love Series

There are SO many books in the Babies Love Series. These books have so many educational components as well as thick sturdy flaps that young babies and toddlers can flip on their own without ripping it. Do yourself a favor and get as many books as you can of this series, they are awesome!

15.) Moo, Baa, Lalala!

Sandra Boynton, the author of Moo, Baa, Lalala! includes memorable illustrations throughout as well as teaching your child about different animal noises. She also includes humor throughout the book that your baby might not get but it will give you a good chuckle.

16.) Usborne Touchy-Feely That’s Not My… Series

This is another great touch and feel series. There are so many to choose from, it may be hard to get just one! These books are soft and sturdy board books that are the perfect size for little ones to carry around.

17.) Little Blue Truck

Little Blue Truck is a popular book and a favorite for many families. Parents and children will laugh along together as the animals try their best to get Blue back on the road and out of the mud! With truck and animal noises throughout, your child is sure to have fun.

18.) Peek-a-Boo Winnie the Pooh

Who doesn’t love Winnie the Pooh and all of his hundred-acre friends? Your baby will love playing peek-a-boo with Pooh and his friends in this chunky flap book.

19.) Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear? Sound Book

Sound books are so much fun! This book has a similar pattern to Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you See? however, the children will be learning about different animal sounds this time. The sounds are very lifelike and your child will have fun pressing all the buttons!

20.) Alphaprints: ABC

Animals and ABC’s? What else do you need? This book not only teaches children the alphabet and different facts about each animal but the pictures are raised like fingerprints and kids will love to rub their fingers over each image while you are reading. Which, if you have a busy baby like mine, who always needs something to do with her hands, is perfect!

21.) Peek-a-Boo Zoo

Peek-a-Boo Zoo is a fun, interactive flap book where your child can play peek-a-boo with different animals. Each page is a riddle and the parents and child will have to work together to figure out which animal is hiding behind the flap. Your child is sure to enjoy themselves.

22.) Llama Llama Sand and Sun

Llama Llama is a fun and well-known character. This time he isn’t wearing his red pajamas, instead, he is in his bathing suit on the beach! This fun touch and feel book is perfect for teaching kids about the beach before you take them on their first tropical vacation!

    My kids still love to read the baby/toddler books they have for bedtime. The books we read to them as babies are the books that will always mean the most!
